AK: Alaska Manufacturing: What's Working & What's Next?
Presenters: Jenny Tse, Owner of Sipping Streams Tea Company; Megan Militello, Owner of Elevated Oats; Samson Sheperd, Owner of Arctic Manufacturing Services; Kate Mitchell, Owner of NOMAR

Alaska has an extremely diverse and long-standing relationship with manufacturing. Whether it was Alaska Native tribes "manufacturing" clothing, communities, and art or Big Oil executives "manufacturing" oil to export to the rest of the world, manufacturing has always been a part of our economy — and likely always will be. But what does the future of manufacturing in Alaska realistically look like?

During this panel discussion moderated by NIST's Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), we're sitting down with four Alaskan manufacturing businesses to ask just that: What's challenged them, what's worked for them, and what they think is next. Our panelists come from all across Alaska and have a combined experience of over 50 years manufacturing in Alaska; join us to hear their thoughts, ask your own questions, and think forward — not backwards — for our manufacturing future!

Social Entrepreneurship: How to be for-profit AND community-focused
As more and more small Alaskan businesses crop up in the modern world, more community-focused brands pop-up too. In the past 5 years alone, we've seen for-profit businesses like Blue Market AK, Furniture Studio + Salvage, and Hair Science build businesses that benefit not only their bottom line, but their communities, too.

In this open discussion, we're exploring all things Social Entrepreneurship, or the approach to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues. Do you have ideas for how Alaska's businesses could better approach these civil challenges we all face? Have questions for the business owners getting their hands in the work? Interested in potentially getting started yourself? Then this is the event for you!

LinkedIn Marketing: How to Show Up in 2022
Let's be honest: We don't talk about LinkedIn enough. Most of us have an account, but when was the last time you logged into it?

Maybe you've seen other people's LinkedIn success online or you've heard about how "powerful" LinkedIn is for B2B marketers. Even if you haven't, it's indisputable: If you're marketing to other business professionals online, you'll have better reach, better interactions, and better conversion rates using LinkedIn.

Because LinkedIn isn't oversaturated with other audiences. LinkedIn is a platform that everybody on it has a purpose. And because LinkedIn is giving more to its' users than ever before.

In this hour-long webinar, you'll learn everything you need to know to get kickstarted on LinkedIn — including profile optimization tips, where to find your audience on LinkedIn, how to engage with them, and what kind of content works well.

These are strategies & tactics I use every day in my own business to secure new clients, get speaking opportunities, and launch new services in my business. ADQ: Alaska’s Mariculture Industry
The mariculture industry in Alaska is currently small, however, it is poised for dramatic growth. The statewide Alaska Mariculture Development Plan, written by the governor-appointed Mariculture Task Force, set a goal to grow the industry to $100 million per year by 2038. The state is already starting to see this growth with 69 lease applications, totaling 2,583 acres, submitted to the state of Alaska for new or expanded aquatic farms since 2016. Alaska’s rich and productive waters are well suited for growing shellfish and seaweed, Alaskans are well versed in marine-based activities, and Alaska’s commercial fishing infrastructure can serve to jointly support the mariculture industry. Mariculture can also bring ecosystem benefits, such as habitat provisioning, reducing impacts of ocean acidification, and bring economic benefit through sustainable food production and green jobs. As mariculture comes into focus for the state’s seafood industry, Alaska Sea Grant seeks to provide support through outreach, education, and research and to serve as a science-based, non-advocate resource. To learn more, join us for Startup Week Alaska.

Build Back Better Opportunities for Economic Development and Startups - Community Discussion
Thirteen coalitions from every corner of our state recently completed proposals for the US Economic Development Administration’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge. Coalitions each proposed 3-8 projects totaling $25-$75 million, using a cluster-based approach to economic development. These projects offer an exciting view into the opportunities and investible ventures designed to create robust, equitable, and sustainable economic growth in Alaska.

Only a few of these proposals may receive federal grant funding, but each contains exciting opportunities supported by public, civic, and private industry partners who will want to find partners and entrepreneurs.

Each coalition will present a short summary of their project portfolio and the opportunities for new venture creation. There will be an opportunity for discussion with the teams to learn about specific projects and time to discuss barriers and challenges to the startup community at large that should be addressed to accelerate innovation in our state and support for these projects.

The program is being offered by the Juneau Economic Development Council and Alaska Version 3

FAI: Nook Tank Design Thinking
November 8 - 12, 2021 is Alaska Techstars Startup Week. The focus of the week is "North To the Future: Start Up, Pivot, Thrive". Startup Week is a celebration of entrepreneurship in Alaska and in connecting the entrepreneurial ecosystem across the State.

UAF students will partake in Nook Tank, a themed design thinking and pitch content exercise. They will think outside the box, work with ideas from others to build a final solution, and develop a minimum viable product to pitch to the end user. Through this discovery process, the teams figure out if they were building a product that a student would want or a must-have.
